Business Dynamics and Challenges
Business Activities:
Sefako Sebego is an informal electrician based in Maokeng who began his business in 2017. He has built practical expertise through years of hands‑on work in residential and small business settings. Skilled in wiring, fault‑finding, and general maintenance, he provides affordable services to households and local enterprises. His reputation has grown largely through word‑of‑mouth referrals, as he fills a critical gap where formal contractors are either too costly or unavailable. Operating independently, he demonstrates resilience and adaptability, sourcing materials, negotiating with suppliers, and managing projects without formal structures.
Sefako Sebego represents strong entrepreneurial potential within the informal sector. By formalizing his operations through certification and business registration, he could unlock access to training, funding, and larger contracts, positioning himself as a recognized small business in Maokeng and nearby towns. With government support programs available to assist informal tradespeople, his pathway to growth lies in transitioning from a community‑based service provider into a structured enterprise that contributes to local development and job creation. He is a person living with a disability (after a grinder accident that injured the fingers on one of his hands) and does not allow this challenge to stand in the way of his ambitions. To date, the business has seen modest improvements and aspires to grow steadily. However, it currently faces several challenges, including financial cash flow management, lack of essential equipment to support operations and capacity, limited transport options, and low business visibility—all of which hinder growth and sustainability.
The company plans to broaden its market through awareness campaigns and intends to expand its operational capacity by purchasing additional equipment to increase market share and sales.
